Amidst uproar about the errors in marking religious structures in the designation survey of city’s draft Development Plan (DP) 2034, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has clarified that status of these structures will not be affected and their designations will be shown in the final draft DP.There has been uncertainty about the fate of religious structures in the city as several major temples, churches and masjids have been shown under various other land reservations and some of them do not even find a mention in the new designation survey, which has been published recently by the civic body for public observations. Civic officials though have refuted the claims that it will affect their status as religious structures. However, citizen groups have demanded that these structures should be marked properly to end ambiguity about them. "There are no reservations proposed in the designation survey and only corrections have been done in the errors committed in earlier draft DP 2034, which was published on February 25. For example, in case of Jehangir Art Gallery, it was mentioned as veterinary hospital in the earlier draft DP. That error has now been corrected in the designation survey," said a senior civic official. Many of the famous religious structures were not designated in the approved DP 1991 and only their names were shown. The official said, "We have continued it in the same manner. If there is no need for correction, their status will be kept same and be shown as it as in the final DP."Replying to queries about these religious structures being included in the commercial and residential zones, he said, "Though the DP is divided into residential, commercial and industrial zones, the locations included in these zones do not mean they have been reserved for that purpose."However, officials of the Watchdog Foundation, which has pointed out the errors in the designation survey, have China Finger Rosary Manufacturers slammed the BMC terming its clarification unclear. Instead of accepting the anomalies detected in the designated survey reports and correcting them, the civic body is trying to justify them, they said."Section 22 (contents of the Development Plan) prescribes the details require to be stated in the proposed DP, which includes religious buildings. This is intentional omission by the BMC administration. Why is the municipal commissioner or any of its officers failing to comply with the provisions of the said Act " asked Godfrey Pimenta from the Watchdog Foundation. The last date for sending observations on designation survey of draft DP 2034 is November 30.
